The boys and I actually also did the parade on our own as Daddy was up at the temple for a youth trip. We missed him too, but were happy for him to visit the temple.
This year we decided to decorate bikes and actually ride in the town's Memorial Day Parade, rather than just observe. After spending the morning curling ribbon and taping streamers, we rode up to the elementary school. There we entered Lewis in the 2-wheeler division and Beau in the 3-wheeler division. Beau won 3rd place for best decorated 3-wheeler! I'll know for next year that there are way too many 2-wheelers to compete with; perhaps Lewis should enter into "best costume" or "best-decorated helmet" or something else! By the way, their helmets are decorated to be Micky and Minnie!
After the competition was done, we watched the parade go by. Since we are a boy family, it's always one of the best things of the whole year - 50 firetrucks, a bunch of other trucks, and cute girl and boy scouts who throw candy...what's not to love!
At the end of the parade, all the decorated bikes join and finish things out! Lewis loved it. He was very official about the whole thing, waving to everyone as he rode by. Beau was being pushed on his tricycle (actually our neighbor's that we borrowed), so he had his hands free. And, since the candy we had collected was all stowed in the back of the trike, he spent the whole parade reaching back to grab lollipops!
All participants get a free Rita's water ice at the end - the best treat!
We headed from there to the annual church picnic. It was miraculously a rather cool day. All of my memories of that picnic are sweating away in 90 degree weather. But, this year was mid-70s and perfect. It was fun!
We went from there to the farm to pick up our share and pick strawberries and snap peas. That's always a treat!
We also bumped into Lewis' friend, Gloria, there. The kids had fun getting snap peas together!
